Editorial: Welcome from the TL Forum Committees

The TL Forum Committees and the University of Western Australia welcome you to the sixteenth annual Teaching and Learning Forum. The theme for TL Forum 2007 is Student Engagement. What do we mean by student engagement? The Forum will provide the opportunity to explore this question and what it means for teaching and learning and the student learning experience. The US National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) uses five clusters of effective educational practice around which student engagement can be discussed: These five clusters of effective educational practice are appropriate sub-themes on which to base our discussions on student engagement at the 2007 Teaching and Learning Forum. The theme is a timely one and closely links to the theme for the 2006 Forum Experience of Learning. The Forum welcomes everyone involved in the challenge of engaging students in all aspects of their university experience.

Our two keynote speakers bring a diversity of perspectives on the theme of student engagement and we believe both will engage you and challenge you. As we have done in many past Forums, we are again providing an opportunity to hear from the students though a panel presentation. This is particularly relevant this year as we discuss student engagement and the students will provide their own individual perspectives on Student Engagement.

Continuing an initiative developed for the 2006 Forum, prizes will be offered for the Best Presentation (page 12). The Best Presentation prizes are sponsored by Apple Inc. and the Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) at UWA. The purpose is to encourage the setting of high standards for presentations, especially with regard to engaging the audience as active participants in dialogue and discussion. There is a prize for best paper presentation (iPod Nano provided by Apple Inc.) and a prize for best workshop presentation (prize provided by CATL). Each session has a Chair appointed by the Forum Committee to assist in conducting the awards process, and to ensure good time keeping.

After favourable experiences with two categories of refereed papers in Forum 2005 and 2006, Forum 2007 called for papers in the same categories, Research and Professional practice. Table 1 below records the numbers of submissions and the outcomes from the review process which we conducted with a panel of 45 reviewers [Review Panel].

While the number of submissions is down this year, and we can debate the reasons for this, participation is still very strong. We encourage you to engage with your colleagues in discussion around our theme of Student Engagement and use our shared knowledge and experiences to better meet the challenge of engaging students in all aspects of their university experience.
